Review international journal: similarities and the differences between my first journal and second journal review

Hi friends!

At this moment I want to share my new blog about  what the similarities and the differences between my first and second blog are.

My first journal titles is
“The Effect of Using Video Materials in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students".

Meanwhile my second journal titles is “ Listening Skill Development Through Integrating subtitle with Schemata Activation”.

As the first, I'm going to tell you the similarities are.

1. Both of these journals are talking about the way to develop students listening skill through authentic material, video or film.
2. Both of these journal are also have same instruments and participants in the methodology process. It is student university and data collection instruments by Pre test the Preliminary English Test (PET).
3. Both of these journal show the The results confirmed the effectiveness of using video materials in teaching listening comprehension and either using dual subtitling or not in order to integration the schemata activation.

For the next is, I would like to share the differences of these journal.

First journal differentiation
The objectives of the first journal are to develop the listening skills of university students studying English with the use of video materials in general.

The second journal differentiation
The objective of this research project was to investigate the influence of schemata or background knowledge and subtitles on second language listening comprehensions.

So guys that’s all form me. Thank you so much for read all my blog in this smester. Glade to see you again.

Review international journal (Theoretical Background): Listening Skill Development Through Integrating subtitle with Schemata Activation

Good morning guys, welcome back to my blog.

In this beautiful morning, I'm gonna to share my new post about international journal review entitled “Listening Skill Development Through Integrating subtitle with Schemata Activation”. And in this part we got arrived to theoretical background of this journal. So this journal which is devided to three parts.

Captions and Subtitle

According to The National Captioning Institute, Caption and subtitles are texts that exists on the TV screen where the text is produced by changing the audio in the form of narration, dialogue, music, and sound effects in the video into text. Caption and subtitles change the audio in text with black background white writing.

Katchen, Lin, Fox and Chun (2002, as cited in Etemadi, 2012) characterize six combinations of subtitles:
1) Standard Subtitling (L2 audio with L1 subtitles)
2) Bimodal Subtitling (L2 audio with L2 subtitles)
3) Reversed Subtitling (L1 audio with L2 subtitles)
4) Bilingual Subtitling (L2 audio with L2 and L1 subtitles simultaneously)
5) Bilingual Reversed Subtitling (L1 audio with L1 and L2 subtitles simultaneously)
6) No Subtitling (L2 audio with no subtitles at all)

With the subtitles, students become motivated and aware of gaining new vocabulary and idioms without having any obstacles. According to Vanderplank (1988) Language acquisition process can helping by subtitles, because the subtitles provide massive quantities of authentic and comprehensible media of learners. Zanon (2006) students are more enthusiastic about learning with the subtitles of the film, because it can connect between images, sounds, and texts at one time.

Schema theory

Schema theory is a learning theory created by Piaget. So after the students watch the video, there are subtitles which will make the process of making meaning in the students' brains.

Previous studies

Rumelhart (1997) new listening material efficient influence by schemata activation.
Pictures and videos are believed to be effective activating student's background knowledge

That's all from me, and
see next week!

Review of International journal (Introduction) :‘Listening Skill Development Through Integrating subtitle with Schemata Activation’

Hi guys, welcome back to my blog
^_^

As I've told you before, in this time I would like to share my new post about international journal review entitled ‘Listening Skill Development Through Integrating subtitle with Schemata Activation’.

Well the reason why I chosed this journal is because I want to learn deeply about how to develop my listening skill trough video materials. In additional I want to know too about what the differentiation progress of development if I watching some video materials using a subtitle with didn't using subtitle are.

Well same as other international journal in general, this journal also contains:
-Abstract
-Introduction
-Literature Review
-etc...

Abstract

In the abstract part of the journal I can knowing that this journal objectives is to know how the influence of Schemata and subtitles in the L2 are. There are two model that used in this journal. For the first model is dual subtitling (Englih dialogue with persian as well as english subtitle at the same time) with schema-activation and  dual subtitling without schema-activation.

Introduction

In this part, the journal only inform the reader how much important listening skil Is. Listening skill become the most difficult skill to learn, because listening is the first language process to learn first language or foreign language before develop speaking skill. That’s why learners have to increase their listening skill always.

Nowadays, multimedia tools such as audio visual often implemented in EFL classroom, because it makes learners feel more entertain and motivate to learn.

One of many kind if audiovisual that have been popular enough is film. It is because film can be uses in the class  or individually, because film contain many contain content that can increase student's motivation to learn foreign language.

So guys that’s all from me for this section.  See you next week!!!

International journal Review (Final) : Effect of Using Video Materials in Teaching Listening Skill for Students University

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog !!!

♡
♡

Well, in this blog I would like to continue my international journal review that I have shared a few weeks ago entitled "Effect of Using Video Materials in Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students" by Wattipoong (2014).
And jfyi, this blog would be the last or final review for the first international journal because next week I will start to share other journals ^ _ ^

Well, The results of the post test in the previous blog explanation show that students' listening skills can be helped to develop effectively by using videos as teaching materials. This is because students are more interested in learning, memorizing and understanding English vocabulary if the teacher uses English videos as teaching material. Overall, students agree that English language videos are an excellent aid for learning English.

The findings above are also in line with research conducted by Maneekul (2002). The results of his study show that the combination of visual and sound images in video teaching materials can stimulate students' listening skills. In addition, the images and gestures in the video also make them better understand the content contained in the speaker's conversation. Students also become more motivated to take part in the learning process that uses video teaching materials rather than using textbooks because the videos are more interesting.

However, the teacher must also pay attention to the topic or video content that suits the interests and talents of the students. In addition, the teacher must also pay attention to the grammatical difficulty level of the vocabulary used in the video, so that they become more motivated to learn.

I think that's all for me, Thank you so much because already spent your time here, reading my blog. See you next week! ^_^

Thank you

International Journal Review (Part 3): Effect of Using Video Materials in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students

Good Morning guys!

Welcome back to my incredible blog *_*
Well, in this beautiful morning I would like to share you about reseach methodology at journal that I would like to review.
Same as before this blog still will reviews a journal entitled 'Effect of Using Video Materials in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students".

But for the first time, I would like to explain to you about what research methodology is.

So what is research methodology?

Reseach Methodology is the process used to collect information and data for the purpose of making business decisions. The methodology may include publication research, interviews, surveys and other research techniques, and could include both present and historical information.

Elements of the Methodology:
-Experimental
-Correlational descriptive
-Action research
-Case Study
-Elements of the Methodology

The methodology will also serve to Reveal the following:
1. Tell who the subjects are and how they were selected. Example: random.
2. Discuss any instruments used and how data was collected. Example: observation.
3. Discuss how the data was analyzed. Example: T-test

So, how about my review journal result?
?
?
Well, after I read this journal I can identify that this this journal contain some elements below.

1) Population

The population that this journal takes are 118 first-year English major students in the second semester of academic year 2012 at Thaksin University.

2) Sample

The sample of this journal are 41 students, involved 20 periods of an hour each. Two periods were used for the pre-test and post-test and the other 22.

3) Variables
Independent variable: The use of video materials in teaching listening skills.
Dependent variables: The students’ learning achievement on listening skills and attitudes towards learning through using video materials.

4) used in this study were :
1) lesson plans 2) English comprehension tests (pretest and posttest) and 3) a questionnaire of the students’ attitude.

5) Data Collection

This journal Collected from the students’ scores of the pre-test and post-test of listening comprehension.

6) Research Procedure

There are 7 steps that used in this research procedure.

7) Data Analysis

This journal take through quantitative analysis. The value of mean scores in this journal was interpreted according to the following criteria value of mean scores:
4.51-5.00 very good
3.51-4.50 good
2.51-3.50 average
1.51-2.50 bad
1.50 or lower very bad

Ok guys see you on the next blog!!!!
Thank you so much

International Journal Review (Part 2) : The Effect of Using Video Material in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students

Hello everyone!
-
-
In this time, I would like to continue my review journal that I've post last week. Same as yesterday, this journal still about education journal entitled "The Effect of Using Video Materials in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students".

So, last week I've shared you about this journal introduction, and now I would like to share to you about the journal's literature review.
1. Literature Review

In the review of the literature discussed about a model of learning processes and the authentic materials for language learning, The use of videos for language learning and related research.

The strategy model used is Bottom-up and Top-down and also interactive processes. Bottom-up processing strategies emphasize individual components of spoken messages: the phonemes and individual lexical and grammatical elements which need to be understood in order to understand the message. In contrast Top-down processing strategies emphasize the purpose and the topic of the message (Nunan, 1998).

Bottom-up and top-down processing is the view that concerns interactive processing comprehension, this means that listeners have to use many types of knowledge.

Acording to this journal, The authentic materials can come in a forms of written text, audio recordings of actual communications or video of conversations or dialogue, all containing content not intended to be used for language instruction.
The used of video in learning process can motivate the students more than other authentic materials because music and setting elements in video can entertain the students and then students can enjoy the learning process.

Maneekul (2002) conducted a study on using authentic material and tasks to enhance listening skill for undergraduate students majoring in English. The results revealed that students’ listening skill increased to a higher level when using authentic materials and tasks after watching native speakers’ video programs.

So guys I think that's enough for today, I'll be back soon at the next blog!

International journal Review: Effect of Using Video Materials in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students

Hi guys! Welcome back to my blog ^_^
How have you been? Long time not see you ehee....

So, after a long time I was busy for doing some nothing wkwk, then now I'm back to share my assignment to this blog *_*

So in this occasion, I would like to share international journal review about "Effect of Using Video Materials in the Teaching of Listening Skills for University Students" by Kretsai Woottipong (2014).

The reasons why I choose this journal is because I desired to know how I can improve my listening skill by something fun such using video. And the reason why  I want to improve my listening skill because consciously I know that I've poor listening skill.
*
*
*
First of all, let me tell you what kinds of structure or point in this journal. Here’s the structure:
Tittle
The name of author
Information of the author
Abstract
Keywords
I. Introduction
II. Literature Review
III. Material and Method
IV. Finding and Discussion
Conclusions

Picture of a student who can't understand what the foreign said.

So, the introduction of this journal is about curriculum development efforts conducted by Thai education ministers to improve their students' English language skills, especially listening skills. Increasing listening skills is very necessary because if children have poor listening skills it will cause lower grades, incorrect assignments, and lost job opportunities.

There are three things that are the reasons for the need to develop listening skills.

1. First, when going to learn a new language children need the same way as when they will learn mother tongue, namely by listening.

2. Second, listening can improve speaking skills, because by speaking, students can interact with each other.

3. Finally with listening practice, children will be interested in learning the vocabulary, grammar and interaction patterns they hear.

One method that can be used to improve students' listening skills is to involve technology such as video.

The uses of video material in the learning process

According to Secules, Herron & Tomasello (1992) by using video material it will motivate students and attract their attention to the aural input.

So guys, that's all from me, see you in next time hehe ♡♡♡
